The central issue is that CP and most gas companies do not maintain their gas lines and right of ways. A large tree grew over the plastic line and ruptured it. The gas line was compromised as it was brittle. Moreover, the manufacturer, DuPont, had advised decades before that the pipe was subject to cracking and should be replaced. Many gas companies still have this pipe in thousands of miles of their lines. This type of failure has resulted in other home explosions and will continue to happen.
