Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a heartbreaking disease. It’s the death of intestinal tissue. Some cases of NEC can be very mild and cause only mild discomfort. But a certain percentage of NEC cases are very severe and potentially life-threatening for the baby. If not immediately treated, serious cases of NEC can cause a perforation or hole to form in the intestinal wall as the tissue dies.
If NEC causes a perforation in the intestine, it allows harmful bacteria from inside the intestine to leak out into the abdominal cavity. This can rapidly progress into a widespread internal infection, eventually causing a deadly bloodstream infection called sepsis. Some infants lose so much intestine that they cannot survive
Medical research and clinical studies have established that giving cow milk formulas such as Similac to premature infants significantly increases their risk of a dangerous bowel infection called (NEC). Some infants lose so much intestine that they cannot survive
To make matters worse, some of the manufacturers of baby formula, Abbott Laboratories, and Mead Johnson & Company, have failed to add this life-threatening side effect to the warning label of their product, causing more unsuspecting parents to put their children at risk.
In fact, the New York Times published an article on September 6, 2022 on how Abbott’s lawyers at Jones Day negotiated secret settlements and used scorched earth tactics with families whose infants fell ill after consuming powdered formula.
The accusations in pending lawsuits against Abbott pose a definite threat to the company, which had staked its reputation on being family-friendly and devoted to health and safety, as David Enrich, bestselling author has written about in his latest bestseller,
Lillian Peebles was born on 6/21/2009 via emergency C-section at 25 weeks’ gestation to Desiree and William Peebles at Women’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. Neither parents nor the medical community were warned that Enfamil causes NEC.
She was fed a mix of breast milk and Enfamil formula prior to falling ill. Unfortunately, she passed away at just 29 days old on 7/20/2009.

THE “EVIDENCE” OF TOXIC BABY FORMULA such as:
A 1990 study published in The Lancet — this landmark study found a link between bovine baby formula and NEC, suggesting that formula-fed babies were at 10 times greater risk for developing necrotizing enterocolitis.
A 2000 study published in the Journal of Pediatrics — a similar study later found that infants fed with breast milk or human milk fortifiers were 90 percent less likely to develop NEC compared to those fed with cow-milk-based baby formula. 2 more studies published in 2013 found even stronger evidence supporting this conclusion.
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Pediatric Research — Researchers found that “premature infants fed formula are more likely to develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) than those who are breastfed.”
A 2021 report published in the British Medical Journal — Researchers found that manufacturers of baby formula like Similac and Enfamil have funded “biased and unreliable” clinical product trials and may have downplayed potential baby formula health risks. The researchers found that the “formula trials lack independence or transparency, and published outcomes are biased by selective reporting.”

It might surprise parents to learn how extensively cow’s milk is used in baby formula. Approximately 80 percent of baby formula products contain cow’s milk, according to NPR. The widespread use of cow’s milk wouldn’t be a bad thing in and of itself if your baby hadn’t been born early.
However, for preemies, whose digestive systems are underdeveloped, the consumption of cow’s milk is associated with an increased risk of NEC, according to a research article published in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine in 2020.
According to Pediatrics Nationwide, as much as 50% of babies who develop NEC perish from the disorder, and nearly 50% of the infants who survive, develop “significant developmental and cognitive disability.”
Sara will explain the legal Strategies they are pursing in these cases on behalf of a multitude of potential victims, and the status of this Multi District Litigation (MDL) currently.
This case has generated an extensive amount of interest, as with many cases involving children’s products, the public is outraged that a manufacturer would knowingly put children at risk of serious injury or death for a profit.
Sara’s hope is that in the future this case will lead to stricter regulations for products consumed by infants, toddlers and young children.
