In 2017, former longtime and very respected police officer, Quitman Police Department Captain Terry Bevill won a $21.35 million verdict in his wrongful termination lawsuit against the City of Quitman Texas
In this new “Justice in America” Network TV Special, our news team is on location in Dallas Texas, with the Bevill’s lawyers Laura Benitez Geisler, Sean McCaffity, and Jody Rodenberg and their client, to discuss how they successfully overcame the biggest hurdles in this wrongful termination lawsuit against the City of Quitman.
Using the power, influence and prestige of their respective elected offices in a small East Texas community, the “Trilogy of Power” aided by Quitman City Secretary (Greg Hollen) conspired to retaliate against Terry for his affidavit testimony, first by pressuring the newly elected Mayor of Quitman (Defendant David Dobbs) into firing Terry.
After Terry was unemployed, Judge Fletcher made sure Terry was virtually unemployable by issuing a warrant for his arrest for aggravated perjury (a 3rd degree felony) and subjected him to bond conditions that were intended to be punitive.
As the federal district court judge, Amos Mazzant III, who had overseen 6 years of litigation in this First Amendment Retaliation and civil rights conspiracy claim captured the essence of this case perfectly in a 98-page memorandum opinion affirming the jury’s verdict:
“This case exists because three public officials weaponized the justice system to pursue their personal vendettas against an honest public servant. Plaintiff Terry Bevill, the former Captain of the Quitman Police Department, submitted an affidavit in support of a motion to transfer [venue] in a pending criminal trial.
The affidavit alleged that the case should be transferred out of Wood County Texas because three elected officials . . . State District Judge Jeff Fletcher, Wood County District Attorney Jim Wheeler, and Sheriff Tom Castloo – shared a close personal relationship that prevented the defendant from receiving a fair trial there. They had him fired and arrested in retaliation….”
