On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10,2020, at approximately 9:48 PM, 28-year old Vanessa Latorre was a rear-seat passenger in a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by her husband, Brandan Latorre.
Their three-month-old son, Levy, was in a rear-facing car seat beside her. Brandan had brought the Jeep to a complete stop at a stop sign at Canal Road and Davis Road in Palm Springs, Florida.
At that moment, an 18-year-old unlicensed driver named Elmer Mendez Mendez — who had been drinking at a Mother’s Day party for hours — came barreling eastbound on Canal Road in a Ford Explorer at 63 miles per hour in a posted 25 zone.
He never braked. The Explorer slammed into the rear of the stopped Jeep with such force that the Jeep was propelled approximately 69 feet across the intersection, through a chain-link fence, and into a grass field. Vanessa was killed instantly.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:00 p.m. The cause of death was atlantooccipital dislocation — an internal decapitation — along with a fractured spine and pelvis. She left behind a husband and a baby boy who was barely 100 days old.
